Signing up does not opt you in. Absent means off, on purpose — nobody gets listed as available for someone else’s Saturday by accident.

Turn it on and you appear in local searches, on the days you marked available, to other listed videographers. That is the whole change. No email goes out, your leads and your profile are untouched, and turning it back off drops you out of search immediately.

There is no email in that shape, so there is no path that puts one in a search result. Contact is exchanged the moment a request is accepted, both ways, between those two people only. Declining costs you nothing and tells the other person nothing beyond a no.
Findable and free are different things
This is the part people get wrong, so it is worth thirty seconds.
Off, you are invisible to peer search no matter what your calendar says.
Only days you explicitly mark are stored. An unmarked day is unknown, and unknown is never shown as available — so a blank calendar surfaces you on no date at all.
Both have to be on for a given date before anyone can find you on it.

Which is the argument for flipping it now rather than later. The person who is already listed when someone in their city needs a hand on Saturday is the person who gets asked. Costs you a checkbox.
